Overview
The VR-4 was one of the most outstanding floorstanders when it first appeared more than 10 years ago. It was a 2-piece, 3-way floorstanding speakers that had the subwoofer module housed in its own cabinet. The mid-woofer and tweeter were housed separately in a large “bookshelf like” enclosure except one major difference, it has no sidewalls. The grille cloths goes round the entire 4 sides of the speaker and there is where the source of the real magic behind the VR-4 lies. Without any real kind of physical boundaries around the mid-woofer and tweeter, there was a relaxed feel and sound to the music with a good deal of space being produced by the VR-4s. Ambiance control on the rear allows some tinkering on the width and depth of the music stage which was very useful when it comes to fitting the speakers into different room sizes. Bass was deep but not particularly tight and was overall very good in terms of matching to different types of music. Operating together, music was detailed, soundstage was wide and 3D like with a very smooth mid-range.
Cosmetically, the speakers are in very good condition for its age. No tears on the grille covers with only some scratches on the wooden base plinth and some on top of one of the speaker. The top panel on the other speaker is fine with very minor marks. We don’t have the original box but will securely pack and ship them as 4 individual boxes for safe arrival.
