Overview
The 34 preamp and 405-2 power amp are one of those great British audio gears that are as recognizable around the World as the “Red Devil” in the crest/logo of the Manchester United football club. The 34 and 405-2 may have come out in 1984 but they will rival or better any current day preamp/power amp combo out there for the same $1,200 asking price we have here. The 34/405-2 pairing you see here is a much better sonic combination (in our opinion) than with the physically matching 306 amp which also only offers half the power output of the 405-2 at 50W. So in terms of power delivery, the 405-2 is more accommodating with current hungry speakers. The tone controls of the 34 has proven to be very useful in our listening sessions when we need to turn up the bass or sharpen the highs. The 405-2 does not have an independent on/off switch because it was designed to be paired with the 34 via its trigger cable. That cable is included with two 5-pin to RCA interconnect cables, one DIN pre to power cable and two phono cards – MM and MC. Both the preamp and power amp are voltage switchable on the back so it can be used anywhere in the World.
Cosmetically, the unit looks really good with minor scuff marks here and there and a tiny spot on the top cover of the preamp where the paint was scraped off (nothing a fresh coat of paint can’t fixed). Combo had one previous owner and was serviced last year in Germany so they are good to go for many more years to come. We have the original boxes and manual and will be double boxed for extra secure shipping.
