Overview
The Evolution MP5.2 media player is such a feature rich unit that it can be the one box solution to a multiple digital front end system. Not only is it a CD player but also a DAC for another six digital sources and a streaming device. The line output is tube based with proprietary AVM83T tubes. CD drive is a TEAC sourced unit with a slot in mechanism which operated impressively smooth. The MP5.2 comes out of the factory without a remote (its an option which you could purchase separately from AVM) and offers “remote” control via their App which you could download on to your phone or tablet. But all the features and functions can be operated via the front panel. Sonically, the MP5.2 isn’t a bad sounding CD player or DAC. Music was cleanly detailed, neutral and a tad sharper than other European based brands like MBL, Meridian etc. In our opinion, $8,500 is a bit on the high side for its level of musicality and features but at a wallet friendly price of under $4,000 now, it is a much more competitive unit when compared with offerings from other competing brands.
Cosmetically, the unit looks really good with just minor scuff marks from being used as a DEMO unit. We have the original box and manual for it.
