Overview
The Baldur 70 also nicknamed the “Baby Baldur” is AudioValve’s smaller and more affordable offering in the Baldur range. The bigger Baldur 300 are a pair 240W monoblock amps that are physically bigger and much heavier than the Baldur 70 you see here which puts out 70W of pure Class A. Both the 300 and 70 uses 6AS7 tubes which has a really “special” tube sound that sounds like a 300B but with a tighter presentation and higher power output. Using four 6AS7 tubes, the Baldur 70s are capable of driving a wide range of speakers with ease unless you have very current hungry speakers or have a large room to fill in which case, you would probably need the ten 6AS7 tubed Baldur 300. We paired the Baldur 70 with our store’s Stenheim, Zingali and Wilson speakers with impressive and very satisfying results. The highs and mids were smooth, rich and nicely textured while the bass was full bodied with good weight to them.
We had the pair gone through at the service department to replaced any worn out parts and re-bias back to factory specs. All tubes are NEW with about 2 hours on the clock for our evaluation purpose. The amps have their own proprietary auto-bias circuitry which makes any power tube replacement as easy as pulling the old ones out and just installing the new ones. Amps are currently wired for 120V operation but can be re-wired for 240V operation. Two pairs of speaker outs offer 8 ohm and 4 ohm taps.
Cosmetically, the amps look good. Minor scuff marks here and there common with use but nothing major. We don’t have the original box but will securely pack them for safe shipping. This is a two box shipment so factor times two for the shipping.
