As the jr – “just right”, in the model name suggests, this is the “smaller” version of their other award winning VR-4 speakers. To us, the VR-4jr MKII had a more up to date physical appearance and being slightly smaller and lighter, a lot easier to manage and room accommodating. The original VR-4 was a 120lb speaker but with the jr, it is a more manageable 78lbs (52lbs for the woofer module and 26lbs for the midrange/tweeter module). Standing 38″ tall, 8″ wide and 20″ deep, it was slimmer and shorter than the 46″x13.5″x19.5″ of the VR-4. With the slightly smaller physical statue, it now uses two 7″woofers (instead of 8″) and a 7″ mid and two 1″ silk dome tweeters (one located in the back). Frequency response is between 23Hz to 20kHz with a nominal impedance of 6 ohm and a sensitivity of 89 dB. These numbers aren’t too far off from the original VR-4 where it dips slightly lower at 20Hz in LF and a 87 dB for sensitivity. Which ain’t too bad considering its ease to fit into any kind of room size where the VR-4 can overwhelm in a small room. And that is where the VR-4jr becomes so enjoyable. Loads of bass energy when demanded and the richly textured mids and sweet highs balances out the wide expansive landscape it produces. What makes this pair even more desirable is that it is a MKII version. Woofers are newly selected with improved damping in both the woofer and the mid/tweeter module. A new active circuit protection is also installed to protect the speaker’s voice coil and the crossover is slightly redesigned to give the speaker more refinement. Placing them 2 feet away from the rear and side walls was how we preferred them in our room so experiment them in your room to find the optimum placement.
Speakers looks nice with minor scuff marks here and there from use but nothing major. We have the two crates for the speakers and will be shipped strapped on a pallet.
