Overview
In terms of a tube headphone amp, it does not get any better than the Earmax piece you see here. Running on three tubes, a volume knob, a pair of RCA ins for one source unit and a separate power supply, your headphone is going to like what it is being fed. Unlike some headphone amps where it can sound too neutral/lifeless or too detailed it makes extended listening tiring, the Earmax is like an organic “living thing”. Music was lifelike, richly textured, warm and smooth. This was their earlier generation model and to our ears, sounded just as comparable to their later generation models which has a much more fancy built and finish. Tubes used are one Tung Sol ECC81/12AT7 and two Siemens ECC88/6922 tubes. Shelf life of the tubes currently is good but we recommend having a spare set on standby.
Cosmetically, the headphone amp is in nice shape for its vintage. Some scuff marks here and there and oxidation of the brass parts but otherwise works perfectly. Unit will be securely packed for safe shipping.
