If you know the PMC MB2 speakers, you will probably know they rarely sell for under $10,000 used. The pair you see here was custom made here in New Jersey by an audiophile/craftsman who was made some very interesting speakers (that we have also sold in the past). His goal was to “replicate” speakers from PMC and ATC but at a much lower price point. But in the end, without volume and a production line, that was never to be the case. So the pair you see here was his one and only production pair because it took him more than two weeks to build and finish. The glossy burgundy finish is a tri-coat finish which was probably the most tedious part in building this speaker. Each speaker with its base stand weighs an almost hefty 130 lbs. Fortunately, the bottom of each base stand has sliders attached so if your room is carpeted, its a breeze to move the 130 lb speaker around. Drivers used are one 1″ soft dome tweeter, one 3″ soft dome midrange and one 12″ Radial driver. Frequency response is 25 Hz to 25 kHz with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm and a sensitivity of 89 dB. The designer tailored the cabinet to be slightly smaller which he claims tighten up the bass and made it less boomy. Speaker dimensions are 14″ wide, 32″ tall and 16.25″ deep (compared to the PMC MB2 which is 15″x34″x22″). Base stands add another 6.5″ to the overall height. We had this compared to the Harbeth M40.2 when they were both in our store and for the money, this custom made speaker was very impressive for the money and it costs thousands lesser. It may not have brand prestige but if sonic quality is your primary objective followed by a modest budget, these speakers should be on your shortlist. The Harbeth may be the more refined, cultured sounding of the two but if you go loud and and want a pair of speakers that will have your feet tapping away, this will do that.
Cosmetically, the speakers are in fair shape. Some chips on the paintwork from DEMO travels but nothing big and ugly. If you want to refinish them again, by all means go for it. The under $1,800 asking price now is a bargain and a refresh will only enhance its value. Local pickup from our store preferred but if shipping is required, they will be shipped strapped on a pallet.
