Overview
The Modulus 2D is one of many models that Audible Illusions makes that has a performance beyond its price tag. Its tube based where two 6922 tubes are found in the linestage sections and another two 6922 tubes in the phono section. This being the 2D version, it was the last of the Two Series before the Three Series replace it. The dual mono volume control is the staple of Audible Illusions’ design and can still be found in their current preamp lineup. The volume attenuators are very precise and spared no mercy in it revealing the nuances of every music track. The imaging was impressive and very lifelike. Phono section is pretty good too. Intended for medium to high output cartridges, it offers 28dB of gain and 47 kOhms of input impedance. If you are using a MC cartridge, a step-up transformer is recommended. For the money, many audiophiles consider the Modulus preamp the best in the class. At $1,000 back then, it was a sonic bargain. And since then, prices have steadily climbed up to almost $5,500 for the current Modulus 3B. So at our asking of $595 now, its a steal.
Cosmetically, the preamp is in pretty nice condition for its vintage. Minor scuff marks/nicks here and there but nothing major. LED is supposed to transition to green after the tubes have warmed up but the LED is probably worn so it turns on red and transition to neutral. A simple de-solder and solder with a new LED will fix that. Brand new JJ 6922 tubes are installed and unit will be securely packed for safe shipping.
