At under $600 now, what’s not to love with these speakers? They were considered by many when they were released in the Eighties as one of the best speakers to come out from ADS. Its 3 way design gave an impressive musical presence with a frequency response of 37 Hz to 27 kHz via a 12″ woofer, 2″ soft dome midrange and 3/4″ tweeter. Placed them on sturdy 12″ stands and they will rival similar speakers from Spendor and Harbeth, the kingpins of large monitor speakers. It may not have the same level of refinement as these other brands but it also did not cost as much. So from a cost to performance ratio, the L980 is way ahead. The L980 was super easy to drive with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm and a sensitivity of 90 dB. Pair it with a good quality amp and you would find yourself (or at least we did) listening to them for hours. They are detailed, large scale sounding and thoroughly enjoyable.
Cosmetically, they look good for its vintage. Some scuff marks here and there and a few tiny wood peel spots but nothing really bad. Grille covers are perforated steel so that will definitely keep inquisitive fingers from the dome drivers. Each speaker weights about 64 lbs so local pickup from our store preferred or they can shipped strapped on a pallet.
