When the CUB was launched back in the late Nineties, we doubt anyone who had their first sight on the CUB (which stood for Center Unitized Bass) had fears that the speakers would tarnish the solid reputation of Wilson Audio. Of course very quickly, the CUB proved there was no likelihood that will be the case and in fact, went on to become one of the most respected and highly sought after reference monitor speakers. Even now, the “mean business” look of the speakers would crush any top class monitor speakers in the sub-$10,000 category. Wilson Audio themselves had applied some of the composite materials they had used on their X-1 Grand SLAMM in the CUB which feels very rigid and solid. Each speaker weighs close to 75 lbs and have two 6.5″ woofers and one 1″ inverted metal-dome tweeter mounted on the front baffle. The speakers are fairly large and especially deep for a monitor speaker. It may have a width of 10″ but the height and depth is 22″. Included in the sale is a pair of Sound Anchor speaker stands made specifically for the CUBs. These are very hefty stands which proved to be invaluable in securing and isolating them down and providing a stable base where they will not be as easily topple over other when compared to other less fitting stands.
Although the sensitivity of the speakers are 94 dB, we strongly recommend driving them with good amounts of power and the amp must be able to operate a good deal of the time in 4 ohm or lesser. Frequency response is 50 Hz to 25 KHz which is plentiful in most instances. But if you really want the speakers to be the neighborhood nuisance, add a subwoofer. The CUBs are about dynamic ability. They have a strong DNA with their other Wilson speakers where they are known for tight, punchy sonic impacts. The speakers can go loud effortlessly and put up a soundstage that is both wide and deep (if the room size permits) with tremendous imaging presence. This is one speaker where its aggressive looks matches its aggressive music repertoire.
Cosmetically, the speakers looks really good. Some light scratches and nicks here and there but nothing major that blemishes the speakers. The foam pads that surrounds the tweeter has disintegrated somewhat, which is a common ailment with them and on Wilson speakers over time, but has no impact on performance of the speaker. We do not have the original packaging for them so local pickup from our store preferred but if shipping is required, we will have them strapped on a pallet and ship as freight.
