The MC225 is a gem of an amplifier that has become such a collectible piece that buyers can be found splurging upwards of $5,000 for one! This particular unit was previously sent back to Audio Classics for refurbishing and brought back to original factory specs. So the unit is now good for many more years to come. On its own, it puts out 25W per channel and if you plan on getting another one and run them as monoblocks, you can get 50W out of them. At 25W, they are not going to out gun many of the newer amps we see today. But in terms of sound quality, the MC225 is a nostalgic hifi gear that reminds us what music was and to a large extent, what it should be. The MC225 is not a crazily over engineered amp that you see in many high end designs but just pure simplicity in bringing music to your sound room. And this it does so comfortably. A good efficient speaker (like a KEF C75), a good preamp and a nice source unit is all that is needed to get your feet tapping. Soundstaging was nicely defined (maybe not as precise as their modern incarnation in the MC275) with a rich, warm textured mids and sweet highs. This “naturalness” is what many owners of the MC225 amp declare as the only amp they will ever own. Which is why they are so highly sought after and their prices have multiplied many times over! Output tubes are four 7591 tubes with one 12AX7, two 12AU7 and two 12BH7 tubes in the input and voltage regulating stages.
Cosmetically, the amp is in good shape for its vintage. There are some scuff marks/scratches here and there and some wearing out of the silk screen wordings on the back panel but nothing major. We don’t have the original packaging but will securely pack it for safe shipping. Copy of the manual and an extra 2 pcs of 7591 tubes are included.
