This is Herron Audio’s most celebrated component in their current lineup. Just go on their website and see the long list of positive feedback it has received in addition to the Stereophile recommendation given by Michael Freemer. It uses five tubes that are a mix of 12AT7 and 12AX7. You can order it either with two 12AX7 and three 12AT7 or four 12AX7 and one 12AT7. This is the more popular two 12AX7 and three 12AT7 version. The difference between the two is this version has a softer gain over the other version by 5 dB in both its MC and MM mode. Input impedance is 47k ohm for MM with infinite impedance for MC if no load resistors are connected. The previous owner ordered two sets of load resistors – 47k and 1k ohm which you just plug into the MC load input plugs. If you need a different value, you can order them through Herron Audio.
The performance of VTPH-2 is just stunning in our listening session with it. It is quiet, draws a holographic image and adds a life-like presentation with any vinyl we put on our turntable. It reminded us of ASR’s phono stage but at a considerably lower price point. The level of performance it offers boils down to the quality of the cartridge you are using. The better the cartridge the higher the level of performance. This is a high performance phono preamp that would rival anything costing up to $10,000. Cosmetically, the unit is in good shape. Some minor scuff marks here and there but nothing major. We have the original manual and two sets of load resistors. Unit will be securely packed for safe shipping.
