The CP-800 is like the “stereo preamp” version of the $8,000 SSP-800 AV processor/preamp. It too has a digital input board for nine digital inputs – 1x USB, 1x AES/EBU, 4x coaxial and 5x optical but mainly to convert two channel digital data. The strength of the CP-800 MKII lies in its musical transparency, full bodied sound and nicely layered imaging. Even though it is largely software based and managed, it does not sound one bit “artificial” or “re-produced” to sound natural. All the inputs – both analog and digital can be assigned (we strongly urge the new buyer to read through its manual first) and there are features where you can adjust the level of bass, equalize the sound, adjust tone controls and USB/Ethernet ports for streaming and Airplay. That’s a lot of functions for a DAC/preamp!
Built quality like all other Classe pieces are built like a tank. Rounded front panel corners is distinctively Classe and sets it apart from the more conventional, straight line, sharp corners seen in other components. Cosmetically, the unit is in good shape. Some minor scuff marks/nicks here and there but nothing major. Remote is included and the unit will be securely packed for safe shipping. Manual is available online. It is currently preset with previous owner’s assigned components so you may want to re-designate if you want to change them.
