This is the flagship model under B&W’s 700 series lineup and the next best thing before the reference standard 800 series. At half the price (at MSRP) of the 804 D3, the 702 S2 is bargain alternative for either the 804 D3 buyer who can’t stretch the budget or the mid-fi audiophile who wants to reach as close as possible to the 800 series range without burning a hole in their wallet. Both speakers feature the same number of drivers – four in total, with the main difference lying in the makeup of the drivers used in each speaker. The 804 D3 uses a diamond tweeter while the 702 uses a carbon based tweeter. Midwoofers and bass drivers are the same with size being the main differing factor. The 804 uses 1x 5″ FST midwoofer and 2x 6.5″ Aerofoil bass drivers while the 702 uses 1x 6″ FST midwoofer and 3x 6.5″ Aerofoil bass drivers. Although the 702 has one additional bass driver, it does not reach down as deep as the 804 (20 Hz) and bottoms out at 28 Hz. Highs peaked out at 33 KHz. With a sensitivity of 90 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm, the 702 S2 proved to be a very easy speaker to drive. Dimensionally, the speaker stands 43″ tall, 8″ wide and 14″ deep. It is slightly taller than the 804 but slightly narrower and less deep.

In our medium size listening room, the 702 S2 was a ruckus to use. From get go, the speaker was unabashed in its singing prowess and dynamic ability. It has a pretty quick response and soundstage projection was wide and deep. Bass was impressively punchy and fast which made listening to live rock sessions a real treat. In switching gears, vocals had excellent imaging and soul presence. If we had to choose a speaker that has an all round balance performance, the 702 S2 would be among our top 5 picks.

Cosmetically, the speakers are in great shape. The usual minor scuff marks and polishing swirl marks that are common with a gloss black finish, nothing major. The base board hasn’t even been use! We have the original boxes for them. As they are shipped in two boxes, shipping cost would need to be multiplied by two for actual. Local store pickup preferred and if you want real shipping, freight is better option.
