This is the next best thing after the 802D if you do not have the space or budget for the 802Ds. The 803D has the same stunning realism and soundstaging as the 802Ds with the bass a tad “lesser” on the 803Ds. The drivers on both speakers are pretty much the same except the number of Rohacell bass drivers and the size. The 802Ds have two 8″ drivers while the 803Ds have three 7″ drivers. Frequency range starts at 34Hz and 35Hz for the 802D and 803D respectively and both speakers are easy to drive with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm and a sensitivity of 90dB. The big difference between the two is the built and mass. The 802D is a much heftier speaker at 160lbs while the 803D is 90lbs. The extra mass on the 802D shows sonically when the 802D delivers a slightly punchier, more controlled bottom end. It also has a slightly deeper soundstage which is appropriate since the 802Ds were designated for the larger rooms.
The 803Ds are one of the finest mid-price reference speakers. They sound impressive with that big scale sound that few other brands can match. Cosmetically, these speakers are in good condition. There are a few marks and dings and one of the corner under the speakers was touched up from a previous ding. Grille covers are fine with some minor wear on the corners. We don’t have the original boxes but will have them strapped on a pallet for shipping. Finish is rosenut. Local pickup is welcomed.
