This is probably the next best thing after the M40.2. Both are 3-way monitor speakers but the Super HL5 Plus is the more accommodating speaker. They will just about fit any room size and all you need to do is just adjust the relevant volume to your room size. It is physically smaller at 12.5″ wide, 12″ deep and 25″ tall and lighter, about 35 lbs each versus 84 lbs in the M40.2 but it has very bit the essence of the World renowned Harbeth sound that many audiophile have come to recognized. The pair you see here is their limited edition, 40th Anniversary version which wears special veneer finishes (walnut), latest WBT-Nextgen binding posts, newer tweeter and specially made Harbeth caps in its crossover. It has a 8″ mid-woofer, 1″ tweeter and 0.75″ super tweeter. Frequency response is 40 Hz to 20kHz with a nominal impedance of 6 ohm and a sensitivity of 86 dB. Previous owner ordered custom made stands (cost $1,100 with the special footers and spikes) which fits perfectly under the Harbeths’. Room placement is critical and once you have that locked down in your room, the imaging and audio display is just vividly live-like. The swath of music just flows right out from the landscape between the speakers. Bass was energetic but not too boomy and the lusciously rich mids and sweet highs complement the almost perfect presentation. Vocals was especially intimate and holographic and speakers adapted well with jazz and classical. Hard rock music may lack the “punchy” drive that is expected from it but that is matter of taste with the individual user.
Cosmetically, the speakers are in great shape, almost pristine. We have the original boxes for the speakers and stands so they will be shipped in four boxes. Local pickup from our store preferred but if shipping is required, contact us for a rate quote.
