These are one of Sony’s rarest and much sought after speakers (amongst Sony aficionados). It was a good 10-12 years ago where I heard one of these on audition with some ATC and Proac speakers. And for the money, the APM-4 was every bit as good as the more expensive ATC and Proac speakers that were used in the same audition. Now with some rare luck, I am reunited with this great speaker with the fond memory of that late afternoon audition many years ago.
The APM-4s are no where as expensive (MSRP) as the Diatone speakers that we just sold and definitely no where as big and heavy. Sonically, the Sony has a unique sound of its own. Its bottom end may not be as heavy as the Diatones but the mids and highs were clear and richly textured. Vocals was particularly holographic in the right setting and when paired with top notch electronics. Frequency range is 31Hz to 30KHz with a nominal impedance of 6ohms and a sensitivity of 90dB. Sony does recommend driving these speakers with 100W or more which we agree. We tried driving them with a 60W and 120W amplifier and the bigger amp was clearly better. Better bass, better mid-range and better extension. Each speaker is approx 36″ tall, 22″ wide and 14″ deep and weighs 100lbs.
Cosmetically, the speakers look really good. Minor scuff marks here and there but nothing major. We don’t have the original boxes so local pickup is preferred. If shipping is required it will have to go freight.
