Overview

This is the rarer version of the Model .5 speakers from Podium Sound. The more common version is the one with a white sock over the speakers and a wood finish frame. This is the rarer version which has the gloss black frame and no socks. Which in our opinion, is the much nicer version since the the speakers “emit” a burnt orange glow in your listening room when light is reflected off it. If you had a chance to listen to these speakers at any of their roadshows, they use a small spotlight that sits in front of the speakers and project its light on it. It was such a soothing and lovely sight which was made even more spectacular when music starts coming out of these speakers! The Model .5 is not a ribbon speaker like Magnepan nor is it an electrostatic speakers that needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet. It has no crossover, has just one pair of binding posts on the rear and a “huge” and thin “membrane” that is suspended within the speaker frame and made to radiate when signals are fed in. The speakers are incredibly efficient at 95dB and easy to drive with a nominal impedance of 6 ohms. Frequency range is an impressive 40Hz t0 20KHz. Each speaker is about 4.5 ft tall, 2 feet wide and about 1 feet deep (with the length of the spine taken into consideration).

Music through these speakers are quite simply once of the cleanest and clearest you would hear from any speakers under $10,000. Soundstage was amazing with ¬†good depth and imaging. These speakers (like Magnepans) do need room to “breathe” and sound their best. Ideal setup would be at least a 3 feet distance from the rear and side wall for each speaker. A slight toe in might be necessary depending on your room size but once in place, they will deliver a musical scale that will amaze you. Vocals and jazz music through these speakers are thoroughly enjoyable at the highest order. Bass was not as voluminous as cone based speaker drivers and may not “rumble” like a 12″ cone woofer but the bass through the Model .5 was tight and impressive. Mids and highs were crystal clear and richly textured.

Cosmetically, the unit is in great shape. Minor scuff marks here and there and a bit of paint flake on the rear where the spine rod goes into the recess hole of the speaker but nothing major.¬†These were former dealer demos. We don’t have the original box so local pickup is much preferred.
