The Monitor Audio Gold Reference 20 is a bargain floorstanding speaker. Made with real wood veneers and quality drivers, these speakers never fails to impress. In the first decade of this century, these speakers were practically nearly impossible to beat for the money. Adorn with two 6.5″ RST/C-CAM drivers (one working as the bass and the other as the mid range) and one 1″ C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter, the GR20 delivered a soundstage and imaging that would have you thinking it came from a speaker costing twice as much, if not more. Their 37.5″ height, 9″ width and 12.5″ depth would have occupied the same real estate as a pair of monitor speakers with stands but with a far more dynamic frequency range – 30 Hz to 30 KHz. Sensitivity was 89 dB with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Recommended power to drive them was a minimum of 100W to 300W. These speakers love power (which is why the manufacturers recommended 100W) and when you do feed them with it (we fed them with 200W), the speakers took on a whole new life. The bass was tighter, punchier and the mids warmer and had more bloom. The highs were incredibly detailed but not overly harsh. In the right mid-size or small sized room and with optimal components, the GR20 is a class act. For under $900 now, they are an audiophile bargain.
Cosmetically, the speakers look good for its age. There are some scuff marks/nicks here and there but nothing major. We don’t have the original box but will securely pack them for safe arrival. Accessory kit box included. They will be shipped in two boxes so factor times two for actual shipping.
