The Sapphire is Mark & Daniels “flagship” monitor speaker in a range that comprises the Ruby and Topaz. At almost $2,300 a pair, they are the most expensive in the range and although shares a “common sized” cabinet of 6.75″ wide, 11.5″ height and 8.5″ depth with its lesser siblings, is the most current hungry of the lot. The manufacturer recommends a power output of 100W or more and we have to agree. When driven with an 80W amp, the Sapphire sounded good but lacked the “extra” punch we got when it was driven with a 150w amp. With that in place, the Sapphire opened up. The highs had a more extended spatial presence and the low end became tighter, more focused. The bass is worth mentioning here because it is only a 5.5″ woofer but with a near 1″ excursion, it can produce a huge amount of bass relative to its size. Frequency response is 42Hz to 25KHz. Their DREAMS (Directly Responding Emitter by Air Motion Structure) tweeter is the other remarkable driver. With its wide response down to 900Hz, it was able to integrate very smoothly with the mid-woofer without any noticeable “bump” you sometimes here in other lesser speakers when the crossover is not as smooth. The speakers need a very well damped and sturdy stand to sound its best. They also need some careful room positioning to bring that deep soundstage into balance. Being rear ported, speakers need to be moved about 12-18″ away from the back wall.
Cosmetically, the speakers look fantastic. Minor scuff marks from use but nothing major. Speakers will be securely packed for safe shipping.
