The 684 is one of B&W’s “entry level” floorstanding speakers. They were $1,100 when new and for that, you get a well built floorstander that is a 2 1/2 way design with dual 6″ kevlar drivers and an aluminum dome tweeter. The newer S2 version of the 684 actually has smaller 5″ woofers and is narrower. Bass output was respectable but if you want to go down to 20 or even 30Hz, a subwoofer is required. If your typical listening taste is not too overly bass heavy and have a good quality high powered amp (tube amps seem to work best with the 684), the 684 will be richly rewarding, musically. If you are in the market for a quality bookshelf speaker and stands, you should have the 684 on your shopping list. We have priced it to be comparable to a bookshelf/stand setup. And if you want to get into the B&W sound, this is an affordable ticket to get in.
Cosmetically, the speakers look good. Minor scuff marks here and there and a couple of small dings but nothing major. The bottom corner peg of each grille cover is missing but with the other seven pegs still in place, the grille cover stays on securely. We don’t have the original boxes but will securely pack them for safe shipping.
